Superintendents: Talking and Reflecting Together

Designed for: First Year Superintendents

What is start?
start (Superintendents Talking and Reflecting Together) is designed for new superintendents with less than one year of experience. This is a mentoring/ leadership program with the objective of providing a new generation of leaders with the knowledge needed to meet the myriad changes before them. start explores these challenges through monthly meetings in small group seminars. The strength of start is sharing common issues with other first year superintendents under the supervision of experienced superintendents.

start meets for three hours from noon to 3:00 p.m. once a month for eight meetings. Our seminars are held in Lansing and at regional locations that are determined once registration is completed. The first session is scheduled for October. Follow the link below for tentative dates.

Why Should I Participate?
The benefits to participating are many including:

  • Provides a coach/client relationship for beginning superintendents.
  • Maximizes training and reduces your out-of-district time.
  • Allows you to learn from experienced educators so that you can avoid some of the "early" mistakes they made in their careers.
  • Provides a collegial environment which helps to develop important networks as you begin your career

How does it work?
We accept up to 15 first and second year superintendents for each seminar and plan on conducting several seminars throughout the year. Your commitment is to attend each meeting (barring any emergencies!) Meetings will be held in restaurants, a host school, or in one of our offices. We will try to make the location convenient for everyone. Our goal is to make it flexible for your schedule and your needs.

Is there A Fee to Participate?
There is a one-time registration fee of $100. No other costs. At our January meetings, the fees are returned in the form of scholarships for students by a drawing in each group.
